The project

In addition to a growing influx of new residents, Qatar’s capital Doha attracts tourists and business travellers in transit every day.

While its metropolitan area continues to grow, major events such as the 2022 FIFA Football World Cup have driven the city to develop a world-class transport infrastructure to meet new mobility challenges.

The network is mobilised, operated and maintained by RATP Dev through RKH Qitarat, as part of a joint venture with Keolis and Hamad Group in Qatar.

Stages in the project

N°1. Mobilisation in record time

Mobilisation through hiring and staff training took under 12 months, compared to the usual 18 months. Today, RKH Qitarat’s workforce comprises 1,500 employees of 48 nationalities.

N°2. 2 Commissioning the entire network

On 10 December 2019, RKH Qitarat marked the completion of the Doha automated metro system by opening the green line to the public, and the second section of the red line, after opening the gold line and the first section of the red line in May 2019. In total, the Doha metro network consists of three autonomous metro lines and 37 stations spread across 76 kilometres of track. At the beginning of 2023, the metro network celebrated a milestone with 100 million trips.

To add to the metro service, in January 2022, RKH Qitarat inaugurated the first segment of the orange tram line in the new city of Lusail, marking a new stage in the deployment of a next-generation, multi-modal and environmentally friendly public transport system. Once it is fully operational, the network will offer four lines and 25 stations over 18km, and will provide two connections with the automated metro network.

N°3. Compliance with the strictest international security and efficiency standards

As a partner in major international events, RATP Dev applies its expertise in multi-modal mobility and operational excellence to benefit RKH Qitarat and the Qatari government, to provide high-quality service and the best mobility experience for residents and visitors to Doha and Lusail. In 2022, during the first FIFA World Cup held in the Middle East, the metro and tram networks transported over 18 million fans from around the world to attend competitions at eight stadiums. Our passengers deemed the networks a success, as shown by our performance indicator. Service punctuality, regularity and availability exceeded 99%, and a daily record of over 860,000 passengers was set.
