As a public transport operator, fighting climate change is part of our DNA. I would like to remind you that traveling one kilometer by metro, RER, or tram emits 60 times less greenhouse gas than traveling alone in a car. But as RATP, we have decided to go further with a very ambitious goal of halving our greenhouse gas emissions over ten years, from 2015 to 2025. Reducing energy consumption is at the heart of this climate action policy.

I will give two examples. The first is our ability to manage the energy transition of bus fleets. For instance, in London, our subsidiary RATP Dev has deployed 300 electric buses for Île-de-France Mobilités, our client. We are currently converting our entire bus fleet — nearly 5,000 buses — with a goal of having 50% electric buses and 50% biomethane buses by 2025. And I would like to remind you that an electric bus consumes 3 to 4 times less energy than a diesel bus.
Another emblematic internal project is the deployment of a digital management tool, which allows all our managers to monitor daily energy consumption and track the results of all employees’ efforts towards efficiency. It is truly a tool in the service of energy sobriety.

The RATP Group has defined a sobriety plan around eight major themes. The first is closely related to our core business: the energy consumption of our transport network. But we also address the impact of illuminated advertising and, most importantly, the mobilization of all staff, because when we talk about sobriety, every action counts.
Our action plan mainly includes long-term energy-saving measures, but we have also decided to respond to the calls of major electricity and gas networks to implement very short-term reduction measures. This is why, in October, we signed the Eco Watt and Eco Gas charters. We are making three main commitments:

To shift the charging schedule of our 500 electric buses during periods of network stress.

On red alert days, to switch off our digital advertising screens, which are already turned off at night.

To relay the red alert to our passengers and employees so that everyone can take the right actions the following day.

We focus much of our efforts on the consumption of our transport network, which accounts for 74% of our energy bill. For example, on Line 14, the work done by the teams to reprogram the automatic driving software allowed us to save 16% of energy on that line.
Other important areas for us include buildings. Our sobriety plan will allow us to save 10% of energy by 2024, in line with government objectives — that represents 30,000 megawatt-hours. Overall, our energy sobriety plan will enable us to save 5% of electricity per year and 14% of gas per year by 2024.
