At RATP since 2016
Thanks to him, public transport is quieter. Assessing sound levels, identifying and reducing sources of noise, improving the clarity of platform announcements… Meet Carlos, a man who prefers his work to speak for itself. Lend an ear!
Carlos is the man who allows you to enjoy the listening to your music with headphones during your morning commute. His job: to measure noise and vibration throughout the transport network operated by RATP, by assessing the sound level linked to traffic, for example. He also ensures the acoustic compliance of industrial sites, new vehicles on the lines, and sometimes even analyses noise pollution reported by residents living near the network.
To find soundproofing solutions, it is essential to know in detail the sound and vibration levels felt by passengers, but also by local residents and our staff.
Each day, Carlos and his team of six acoustics experts analyse needs, carry out on-site measurements, then interpret this data to identify improvements to be made, and finally prepare a test report. To achieve this, they carry out on-site measurements followed by computer calculations in the laboratory.
Their responsiveness and technical excellence are essential qualities in adapting to the very diverse cases found in a network as large as RATP.
For Carlos, it is also the diversity of the means of action and the variety of contacts that enrich his job: “It is exciting to be at the service of all company departments. It allows you to get to know about all transport modes and RATP’s expertise, to understand all its complexity and to build a solid network. Being on the ground every day and a public transport user myself, also allows me to understand the feelings of passengers and residents, and ultimately to see the result of my work.”
